In our last thread we discussed about programmable computer!! Now we are gonna discuss about first electric programmable computer!
Any Idea or guess from the Name? Friend.
Yep!This machine was also build by British Engineer of London!
Thomas Harold Flowers known as Tommy Flowers:
Born: 22 Dec 1905
Death: 28 October 1998 at age of 94!!!
In 1926 he joined in General Post Office and moved to research station where his life changed!
1935 onward he examine the use of electronics for that All electronic system was possible and this was the background to design the computer.
Now we can see about the Colossus, the first electronic programmable computer.
It was used by British codebreakers to help read encrypted German messages durning World War II.
Colossus was designed by Tommy Flowers with Sidney Broadhurst,William Dhandler, Allen Coombs and Harry Fensom.
They spent 11 Months to built Colossus.
Colossus was built with vacuum tubes, photo multipliers, thyratrons to read optically read paper tap and then provided to programmable function to character.the pic of Mark1 is below
No internal stored programs to start a new task the operator want to set up plugs and switch to change the wiring.
It was not a general purpose machine and it was designed for a cryptanalytic task and boolean operations.
The first Colossus Mark 1 was proposed in Feb 1943 and new idea raised and they reconstructed the fully functional replica and named as Colossus Mark 2 was build in 1994.below pic shows reconstruction of Colossus.
The first Colossus Mark 1 was followed by Mark 2 was being commissioned on June 1944 and Mark 1 is converted into Mark2.
Mark 1 consists of 1500 electronic values and Mark 2 consists of 2400 valves and both are five times faster and it was simple to operate. Mark2 was designed during the construction of Mark 1.
An 11 Colossus was finished at end of War.
End of Colossus was after VJ Day(Victory over Japan) and eight of Colossus was dismantled.
