SIMC hosts ‘SIMConquest’ - The Alumni Entrepreneurship Meet
Lavale, Pune – 3rd August, 2014: Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication hosted ‘SIMConquest: Igniting an entrepreneurial spark’-an event for students to interact with successful entrepreneurs, who are also Alumni of the Institute. The meet was held at the Symbiosis Knowledge Village, Lavale, Pune on 3rd August 2014. The speakers for the day comprised of eminent Alumni, who have established their own outstanding ventures in the media sphere and sought to address the concerns of young, budding entrepreneurs.
Addressing the large audience of students and faculty, Mr. Anand Mahesh (Mavcomm Consulting, Co-Founder,) from the 2001 batch, reflected on his days as a student in the Institute, describing how he found his calling in the field of Public Relations and the journey from his first job in PR to starting out on his own. “I decided to stop working for others and start working for myself,” he said, as he illustrated how his firm grew from a small, home-run office to become a leading, integrated communications consultancy today.
Mr. Varun Duggirala (Co-founder and Left Brain, The Glitch), who started his company with his best friend from SIMC’s batch of 2007, struck a chord with the students as he described how he found his passion in Audio-visual and filmmaking while studying at SIMC. He joked, “Well, if you want to be an entrepreneur, there is no Sunday. You either work every day or every day is a Sunday.” He outlined the early stages of his venture into Brand Strategy in Digital and Social media, how learning and adapting on-the-go was essential for an entrepreneur and why creating a fun work culture was necessary. Expounding on how he set about starting his company with his roommate from SIMC, Mr. Mayur Milan (Director, Ourbit Marketing Communications) described how he worked on his own project on marketing communications while in college. “There is no idea that’s not worth exploring,” he stressed. He further elaborated on many facets of social and digital media research that are yet to be explored.
The second session had Mr. Abhishek Singh (Co-Founder and Creative Bee, Beeing social), speak to the students about how he started a digital communication agency that deals in corporate digital media marketing. “Any business needs to be given 1000 days to figure out its viability,” he mentioned, ‘”You need to be prepared with leaving behind your jobs and its comforts and restart in order to be an entrepreneur. Be prepared to lead a very basic lifestyle and work extremely hard.’ After recollecting his journey from SIMC to entrepreneur in graphics, music videos and promos, Mr. Mrinal Bahukhandi (Creative Director, Clockwork Studio) sought to define the traits of an entrepreneur as someone who is enterprising, finds opportunity in crisis and is an inspiration for potential entrepreneurs.
“Entrepreneurship has delayed gratification- deferring gratification for something much larger in the outcome at a latter point of time. It has its own risks and rewards,” said Mr.Vishwas Mahajan (President, The Indus Entrepreneur - Pune Chapter), who further enlightened the gathering on key concepts like Founders contribution, Angel Investment and Venture Capitalists. Emphasizing primarily on social entrepreneurship, Dr. Aravind Chinchure, Chair Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, SIU said, “Entrepreneurship can bring access equality in spite of economic inequality.” He believes that entrepreneurship in the context of India has a social imperative that addresses economic inequality that exists in India.
The students of SIMC were able to better understand the concept of entrepreneurship and the challenges faced at the onset. Starting out on your own always seems daunting and risky at first, but being an entrepreneur has tangible and intangible rewards, as testified by the speakers of the day.
